The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team into third place in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

After a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.

Everton: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
