The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
