Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
